Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

I have the opportunity to photograph this little sweetie and her twin sister (5 month old babies) in a couple of weeks, and today I met with the mom to discuss the details. I snapped a few pictures while I was there. No lights, and today was overcast so the natural light sucked as well. This is the best I could get.
They were so sweet!

I had the chance to shoot this adorable baby today! So smiley and happy with those big blue eyes...she found her thumb after awhile and then nodded off to sleep :)

Yes, that's right...a somewhat foldable 5 month old! It rocked!

“To be young, gifted and black” Lorraine Hansbury

During the late 1950’s African-Americans were beginning to speak of the injustices of race, discrimination, education, and the lack of pride of a people that was subjected to the rigors of American racism. Certain scenes of white segregation took hold and roar it’s ugly head when Emmett Till, a young teenager from Chicago, visited his family in Money, Mississippi during the summer of 1955. Being from the north, the young Till wasn’t acclimated to the strict ‘Jim Crow‘ laws and rules blacks had to obey. One day he went to the store with his cousin and allegedly whistled at the store owner’s wife. Word spread fast and then soon Till was kidnapped from his great uncle’s home and then tortured, beaten, and shot then killed. Roy Bryant, owner of the store that Till made the gesture, along with J.W. Milam, then took Till’s body and thew him in the Tallahtachie River with a cotton gin fan tied around his neck. Both Bryant and Milam were acquitted for the murder of Emmett Till. Mamie Till, the mother of Emmett, wanted the world to see what these brutal men did under the laws of the ‘Jim Crow‘ south.

This incident, along with the monumental arrest of Sister Rosa Parks, lead to what would become the era of the Civil Rights Movement that lead, and still leads the battle for blacks and minorities around the country. It was also this time that the Black Arts Movement began producing black writers, artists, directors, and musicians to express their art, via the arts, a new awakening throughout the country. Writers like James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Cecil Brown, Nikki Giovanni, and Ishmael Reed expressed the deep concerns of the plight of blacks trying to have the same equal rights. Even sports figures like Muhammed Ali, Jim Brown, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain played a major part on trying to allow blacks to compete or ask for the same pay as their other white counterparts.

When it came to the Black Arts Movement in the arts, icons like Paul Roberson and Josephine Baker had been blackballed by Hollywood and Washington, DC due to their strong political beliefs and how some in the establishment didn’t take kindly to “black nationalism” as J. Edger Hoover, former F.B.I director stated. Musicians like Odetta, Harry Belafonte, Abbey Lincoln, and Max Roach began to play and sing songs of the civil rights movement. These song or spirituals were the nucleus of rallies and marches all over the south.

Sister Nina Simone was both a fiery and passionate musician and vocalist that gave the world her unique social commentary at a time during the 1960’s when all blacks were tired of fire hoses, home bombings, and the south’s ‘Jim Crow’ laws. One of Simone’s many anthems included “Mississippi Goddam,” a song about the many atrocities that took place in Mississippi and parts of the south during the early 1960’s. Incidents like the murder of NAACP activist Medgar Evers being assassinated, the four little girls that where bombed to death in Alabama, and Dr. Martin Luther King’s endless tirades to organize effective non-violent demonstrations to raise the awareness of civil injustices against blacks.

Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21st, 1933 in Tyron, North Carolina, Nina the was sixth child of eight in a struggling working class family. Her father was a minister by trade, but was also a businessman that owned many businesses until the depression wiped out the local economy in the surrounding cities where she grew up. Her mother and many in the community knew of young Eunice’s gift to play the piano and singing. She always played during church every week as well as special functions. Nina received free piano lessons and played and competed during middle and high school. Upon graduation, she was supposed to study classical piano at the Curtis Institute of Music where Nina had high expectations to become a classical pianist. Although she wasn’t accepted, she moved to New York City where she studied at the Juilliard School of Music. Playing bars in Atlantic City to help pay for her tuition, she changed her name to Nina Simone named after the French actress Simone Signoret. Nina was also developing her stage presence and her unique blend of all forms of American roots music. She played classical, pop, jazz, blues, and what would evolve into soul music.

On a whim, she recorded a group of singles that would become her debut record called “Little Girl Blue” in the winter of 1958. One of the singles of that session,“I Loves You Porgy,” would become a hit for Nina and the rest would become history. Nina, years later would find out decades later that when she sold the rights to her debut album for $3000, the record would go on to make millions leaving her angry for years that she didn’t get any royalties.

From the start, she didn’t have many hit recordings like her contemporaries like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, and Sarah Vaughan. Nina’s music was considered ahe

Bobby Farrell performing at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, in 1978

The Telegraph 31-12-2010

Bobby Farrell
Bobby Farrell, who died suddenly in St Petersburg on December 30 aged 61, was ostensibly the lead singer of Boney M, the disco group which achieved wide popularity in the 1970s with hits such as Rivers of Babylon and Daddy Cool.

6:20PM GMT 30 Dec 2010

Assembled in 1976 by the German-based producer and composer Frank Farian, Boney M consisted of three girls — Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell and Maizie Williams — and Bobby Farell. They were distinctive for their outlandish costumes and hairdos and for their extravagant dance routines, and sold more than 100 million records.
The group, based in Germany, broke into the charts with Daddy Cool and Sunny in 1976. In 1978, Rivers Of Babylon (with its reverse side Brown Girl in the Ring) spent 40 weeks in the British charts, and it remains one of the bestselling British singles of all time.
The fact that the male vocals were actually performed in the studio not by Bobby Farrell but by Frank Farian did nothing to diminish their popularity.
But Farian never appeared on stage, leaving that side of the business to Farrell. According to Liz Mitchell: “[Farian] obviously thought himself not presentable enough to perform . It was understandable because Frank Farian is a white German and the music of Boney M was West Indian, American, African rhythm.”
Bobby Farrell was born Alfonso Farrell on the island of Aruba, in the Lesser Antilles off the coast of Venezuela, on October 6 1949. He decided to leave home at the age of 15 to go to sea, ending up in Norway and then in Germany, where he initially earned his living as a DJ and as an occasional dancer and male model.

He came across Farian after the producer had recorded a song called Baby Do You Wanna Bump, which he wanted to promote.
Farian had already selected a name for the artists behind the release, taking Boney M from the name of a detective series on Australian television. Having persuaded Farrell to come on board, along with Barrett, Mitchell and Williams, the publicity machine went into action. Boney M were thus very much in the tradition of “manufactured” pop groups started by The Monkees in the 1960s.
The group’s first album, released in 1976, was Take the Heat off Me, but Farrell’s voice was not used on the record after Farian decided that it was not good enough. Where Farrell excelled, in the producer’s view, was as a dancer and performer on stage, and Boney M duly strutted their stuff around the discos and clubs of Germany. Eventually the group would have 15 number ones in Germany, including Brown Girl in the Ring and Mary’s Boychild.
In the late 1970s it seemed that Boney M could do no wrong. Daddy Cool (1976) was followed in the same year by Sunny; and in 1977 came Ma Baker and Belfast. Rivers of Babylon — originally recorded by a Jamaican group, the Melodians — was a colossal hit across Europe, and the group then came out with Rasputin and Mary’s Boy Child/Oh My Lord, which in 1978 was the Christmas No 1 in Britain.
Also in 1978, Boney M were invited by the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev to perform in the Soviet Union, the first Western group to be accorded such an honour. They were flown by Soviet military aircraft from London to Moscow, where they performed in Red Square before an audience of 2,700.
Other of Boney M’s hits included Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday and Painter Man. There were three successful albums, including, in 1980, The Magic of Boney M — 20 Golden Hits, and the following year Farrell briefly left the group, which would break up in 1986 amid some acrimony. There were claims that Boney M received only nine per cent of the profits from their music, and Liz Mitchell later said: “The actual people who did the singing, which is Marcia Barrett and myself, didn’t get any credit.”
Farrell continued to perform with a variety of female backup singers, maintaining his flamboyant style and continuing to sport his fancy costumes. “I like to look good on stage and to release all my energy in my shows,” he said. “I still wear my glitter costumes and my girls always look glamorous alongside me.”
In recent years he had toured under the name Bobby Farrell’s Boney M, offering a blend of disco and Calypso music. He liked to be known as “The King of Disco”.
Bobby Farrell, who lived in Amsterdam and was divorced from his wife, was found dead in a hotel room in St Petersburg, where he had been performing. He had complained of breathing problems both before and after his show on December 29. He had been due to perform in Italy last night, New Year’s Eve.

Eastern Oregon/Portland Family Trip July 2009

Eastern Oregon/Portland Family Trip July 2009

Mom & I went on a five day driving trip through Eastern, Oregon.

Some highlights: Outsider Art Monument: Petersen Rock Garden in Redmond (friendliest peacocks I’ve ever met!). The John Day Fossil Area was amazing – the Painted Hills and Sheep Unit. At the latter we went down a trail called something like “Island back in time” and were mesmerized by the strange chalky green rocky landscape with no life growing from it. We were lucking out with 75 and Sunny in a place that can get 110 this time of year. The new Paleontology Museum is very interesting. I became obsessed with touring cyclists and wished I was on my bike. Even saw a group of 4 punk-style riders, with just boxes and blankets strapped to the back of their bikes. We barely made the last tour at the Kam Wah Chung Museum in John Day not knowing that you can only visit with a guide. This old apothecary/store/house set in what once was a Chinatown was really interesting to me. Then on to Baker City, Oregon which is really a great town – I walked around at Sunset and thought about setting up a portable press shop here for a month. We stayed in the Geiser Grand Hotel, which isn’t as expensive as you’d think, and my oh my were those sheets soft. The next day for the firs half of the we visited the National Oregon Trail Interpretative Center a top Flagstaff Hill, 5 miles outside of town. The museum got a thumbs down from me (too general, busy, not into taxidermy horses), But the center and walking trails are worth it and I loved visiting the actual Oregon trail and seeing the old wagon ruts. Mom and I realized that we could visit Hell’s Canyon afterall. I really wanted to go, but we didn’t want to hit gravel roads. We found there was a road to an overlook that we could take on our way to Joseph. We stopped in Halfway, Oregon and I got a chocolate milkshake. At the overlook in Hells Canyon there is a pretty amazing view of the nation’s deepest Canyon. You can’t see the floor or anything, and you feel far away, but it was still beautiful. In Joseph we didn’t like our stinky overpriced smelling cabin or the fact that everyone and their family seemed to be around the Lake in the Wallowas, but I took advantage of the pool/hot tub and beat my mom in Scrabble even though she made two whole words. In the morning we played mini golf at the resort while a couple long haired boys watched us. Mom loves Mini golf! We were going back and forth on whether we should take the Tram to the top of Mt Henry, we heard it was good, but wondering if we should get a move on. But luckily we decided to go. The weather was great and I couldn’t believe the Swiss Gondola style tram went an entire mile up. We were at over 8000 feet! At the top we were greeted by a gopher and a chipmunk, little did we know that we’d meet many more “friends” on our visit up there. We walked around the trails and had a very chipper time. On the way out of Joseph we stopped at the local county museum – I asked the friendly senior ladies what they liked most in the museum. One lady said the electric curler (a scary monstrosity!) and the other lady said a grade school exhibit from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Fair. I myself was amused by the Moonshine exhibit. I gave the one lady a painting I made of the electric curler and she was so pleased! We then drove through a few small towns and headed towards Pendleton, getting loss in La Grande on the way. Pendleton was so much smaller than I thought (all the round-up/blanket hype), but I enjoyed the murals, and my mom and walked on the riverwalk which was buggy at dusk. We played another game of Scrabble where I almost won, until I made a stupid fatal error on my second to last turn. In the morning (Saturday) we walked around town, but nothing was open and we looked like hick tourists. I guess all the action was on Friday night. Finally a few shops opened, but every one seemed to be selling old stuff – some of it good (the Curio shop!) some bad (beanie babies, and romance novel, now really!) And everyone wanted a lot of money for crap. We headed out of town (backtracking a few miles) to go to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute which in on the Indian Reservation. Right before we stopped for gas, and waited to be served (can’t pump your own gas in Oregon), but no one came, and then we realized, oh on the reservation you pump your own gas! The museum is past the casino that had a full parking lot. The museum lot only had three cars. I was really impressed with the exhibits and design and learned a lot about five Indian groups from the area. Outside it was heating up, planning on getting up to 100, I walked around displays of different kinds of Indian housing.

We then headed down the Gorge towards Portland and watched the scenery slowly change from beige to green. We crossed the toll bridge at Hood River to Bingen to meet my Sister Sarah and 3 ? year old nephew Andy who were coming on the 6:20 train. They had a long day starting in Mt. Vernon, Washington. We ate

It's amazing to think that Nicole Richie just gave birth to baby Harlow a few months ago, because she looked incredible in Louboutin heels and a flowing dress Tuesday afternoon. Making the retail rounds with boyfriend Joel in West Hollywood, the marvelous mother stopped at an event at fashion retailer Diane von Furstenberg before heading to the Madden-owned DCMA. Joel Madden played the doting boyfriend, holding Nicole's hand and carrying her bags, while Nicole walked the street like it was a red carpet. Fellow new mothers should take note to Richie's post-pregnancy regiment, because she is looking fit and sexy, only 3 months after giving birth.

How to Dress for Success

"You can do anything you want in life if you dress for it," says Edith Head in How to Dress for Success. Would you like to look younger, prettier, slimmer? Would you like to attract a new man and hold on to the current one? Would you like to get a better job and earn more money? Then this is your book. Edith Head (1897-1981) dressed stars from Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn. This reprint of Head's 1967 tome serves as a timeless reference to looking your best. Head offers no-nonsense, and often hilarious, fashion advice. Illustrated with Head's original black-and-white line drawings and packaged with a chic cloth cover, this pocket-size guide is packed with smart tips on how to accessorize, dress for all occasions, and develop your own personal style.

Praise for How to Dress for Success:

"While much of Head's advice seems from a bygone culture (whatever happened to hostess pajamas?), her basic ideas are timeless. If you are willing to follow her occasionally rigid prescriptions, you will look good."
-The Wall Street Journal

"The advice is nearly half a century old but still right as rain . . . The circa-1967 tome has been reprinted by book publisher Abrams in a snazzy, lavender cloth-bound cover that matches the book's snappy but ladylike tone."
-The Los Angeles Times

"Legendary costume designer Edith Head dressed everyone from Audrey Hepburn to the recently departed Elizabeth Taylor in her heyday, and the sartorial wisdom she picked up along the way still has surprising resonance decades after the Mad Men era. The recent re-release of her style book, How to Dress for Success, is full of amazing advice that's as useful in 2011 as it was when it was first published in 1967."

The Barbaric Butcher of Baptist Mills

The Barbaric Butcher of Baptist Mills

John Cann was 20 years old, married and the father of a 10-week-old baby girl called Anne Elizabeth. He was a resident of Campbell Terrace, Baptist Mills, 5 feet 6 inches tall with black hair and hazel eyes, he had a round face with a fresh complexion and there was a scar on his left cheek. He is described as being a butcher and later evidence seems to suggest he ran his own shop but studying trade directories for that period of Bristol's history it would seem to be that he came from a family of butchers.

The shop at 70 Redcliffe Street was for many years in the ownership of a John Cann but it can almost certainly be assumed that this was his father's shop, which he may have managed on his father's behalf. It was later to emerge that, prior to his marriage, he lived with his father in what was entered into Gloucester Prison records as 'Rackcliffe Street' at which time he attended 'Rackcliffe church' but this mistake could well be blamed on his accent. Even today the pronunciation sometimes emerges as 'Reckliffe'. In All Saints' Row, at the back of St Nicholas Market was another butcher's shop, this one owned by a Mary Cann who may have been a sister or aunt.

The incident which was to alter the course of Cann's life forever took place on a December night in 1846. On the morning of 7 December Cann was drinking at a pub called the Sugar Loaf, probably the one in Nicholas Street. Perhaps he had been attending to business in Mary's shop. He was in the company of Thomas Williams who was later to say he remembered Cann's wife, Elizabeth, coming in with the baby in her arms between 10 and 11 o'clock. Cann held the child for a while saying he wished it had been a boy. Between 12 noon and 1 o'clock the party adjourned to the Queen's Head. This may have been the one in St James' Barton.

There Williams treated the party, which had increased to five, to '3 half-pints of rum and shrub.' 'Shrub' was composed of lime or lemon juice and sugar and was commonly drunk with rum, although any spirit could be used. The name derives from the Arabic shurb from which the words syrup and shebert also originate. The group had already sunk 4 or 5 quarts of 'Burton' which was a bitter beer, a typical working man's drink. During their time in the Queen's Head Cann, apparently, 'took the child from his wife, nursed it, and held it up towards the gas'. Whether this indicates there was gas lighting at the inn is unclear. A number of the streets in the city were certainly gas-lit by 1846.

After this session Thomas Williams took himself home. Not so John Cann who was next spotted in Bath Street by John Thomas Lee, a policeman who had known him for some 7 or 8 years. Shortly afterwards he heard a woman screaming on the other side of the river, the thoroughfare known then as Back of Bridge Street, now the pathway bordering Castle Park. Lee swiftly made his way there and was in time to see Cann knock his wife down and then kick her. The wife was crying 'Murder!' then said 'The dear child is dead ... the dear child is dead'. As Lee approached he saw Mrs Cann was trying to drag the baby from the ground by its clothes. The policeman picked up the child and saw it was, indeed, dying and told Cann 'It is dying as far as it can', to which Cann replied 'It cannot die but once'. Mrs Cann said that her husband had kicked the baby in the head and thrown it across the road three times.

She also said that he had sworn that very morning that he would 'get some sleeping stuff which would put it to sleep so that it should never wake up again and now he has done it'. John Cann was taken into custody in the early hours of the morning of 8 December. He appeared very matter-of-fact about the whole affair, enquiring of William Harris, the custody officer, what time he would be taken before the magistrates and asking what Harris considered his fate would be. He said they could have done nothing to him if he had told his wife, which apparently he had, that he would give the child something to make it sleep so it would never wake again. It seems the baby cried a lot at night and drove him to distraction.

Then in an effort to cite extenuating circumstances he said that he had a fit in Bath Street 30 minutes before the incident and 'did not know what he was about'. In point of fact he was subject to epileptic fits, suffering one while he was attending the inquest at the Two Anchors in Guinea Street the following Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the mother and child were taken to the General Hospital where the child died within 2 hours. John Mason, the attendant surgeon, said he had 'found the head much injured and swollen'. He discovered the skull to be fractured with part of the brain protruding. He had no doubt that death was caused by these injuries. Because of Cann's fit - a severe one - it took three or four men to hold him down, so the inquest was adjourned until the Wednesday.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David (Hebrew: {??????, ???????}, Modern David Tiberian Dawi?; ISO 259-3 Dawid; Strong's Daveed; beloved; Arabic ????, (Dawud)) was the second king of the united Kingdom of Israel according to the Hebrew Bible and, according to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, an ancestor of Jesus Christ.

He is depicted as a righteous king, although not without fault, as well as an acclaimed warrior, musician and poet, traditionally credited for composing many of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms.

Edwin Thiele dates his life to c. 1040–970 BC, his reign over Judah c. 1010–1003 BC, and his reign over the united Kingdom of Israel c. 1003–970 BC.[1]

The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only source of information on his life and reign, although the Tel Dan stele may record the existence in the mid-9th century of a Judean royal dynasty called the "House of David", although this is disputed.

David's life is very important to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic culture. In Judaism, David, or David HaMelekh, is the King of Israel, and the Jewish people.

A direct descendant of David will be the Mashiach.

In Christianity, David is known as an ancestor of Jesus' adoptive father Joseph, and in Islam, he is known as Dawood, considered to be a prophet and the king of a nation.

David is chosen of God

God withdrew his favour from Saul, king of Israel.

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.

1 Samuel 15:11 The prophet Samuel seeks a new king from the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem.

Seven of Jesse's sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel says "The LORD has not chosen these."

He then asks "Are these all the sons you have?" and Jesse answers, "There is still the youngest but he is tending the sheep."

David is brought to Samuel, and "the LORD said, 'Rise and anoint him; he is the one.'"[2]

David at the court of SaulGod sends an evil spirit to torment Saul, and his attendants suggest he send for David, a young warrior famed for his bravery and for his skill with the harp.

Saul does so and makes David one of his armor-bearers and "whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play.

Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him."

The Israelites, under King Saul, face the Philistines in the Valley of Elah. The boy David is bringing food to his older brothers who are with Saul.

He hears the Philistine giant Goliath challenging the Israelites to send their own champion to decide the outcome in single combat.

David tells Saul he is prepared to face Goliath and Saul allows him to make the attempt.

He is victorious, striking Goliath in the forehead with a stone from his sling.

Goliath falls, and David kills him with his own sword and beheads him; the Philistines flee in terror.

Saul sends to know the name of the young champion, and David tells him that he is the son of Jesse.[3]

King Saul and David

David and Jonathan

Saul makes David a commander over his armies and offers him his daughter Michal in marriage for bringing more than 200 foreskins of the Philistines to him.

David is successful in many battles, and his popularity awakes Saul's fears — "What more can he have but the kingdom?"

By various stratagems the jealous king seeks his death, but the plots only endear David the more to the people, and especially to Saul's son Jonathan, who loves David (1 Samuel 18:1, 2 Samuel 1:25-26).

Warned by Jonathan, David flees into the wilderness, where he gathers a band of followers and becomes the champion of the oppressed while evading the pursuit of Saul.

He accepts the town of Ziklag as a chief from the Philistine king Achish of Gath, but continues secretly to champion the Israelites.

Achish marches against Saul, but David is excused from the war on the accusation of the Philistine nobles that his loyalty to their cause cannot be trusted.

David becomes king

David mourns their deaths, especially that of Jonathan, his friend, and then goes up to Hebron, where he is anointed king over Judah; in the north, Saul's son Ish-Bosheth is king of the tribes of Israel.

War ensues between Ish-Bosheth and David, until Ish-Bosheth is murdered.

The assassins bring the head of Ish-Bosheth to David hoping for reward, but David executes them for their crime against the Lord's anointed.

Yet with the death of the son of Saul, the elders of Israel come to Hebron, and David, 30 years old, is anointed King over Israel and Judah.[6]

Jerusalem and the Davidic Covenant

David conquers the Jebusite fortress of Jerusalem, and makes it his capital, and "Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house."

David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, intending t
